Demonstration Class

Curious about keeping bees but not sure where to start? This lively and information-packed 2.5-hour workshop is designed for aspiring beekeepers and anyone interested in learning more about bees, hives, and pollinators. You’ll get a thorough introduction to the workings of a beehive, the pros and cons of beekeeping, and the steps to take when getting started.

But we won’t stop at honeybees! You'll also learn practical ways to invite native pollinators into your yard and support local biodiversity.

We’ll wrap up with a mini honey tasting to explore the sweet (and surprising!) differences in flavor based on flowers and forage.

Whether you’re prepping for your first hive or just love pollinators, this class is packed with helpful knowledge and plenty of fun.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

  • Understanding hive structure and bee behavior

  • Beekeeping 101: equipment, setup, and seasonal care

  • Encouraging native pollinators in your garden

  • Honey tasting to understand honey better & explore flavor variety

Bring your questions and your curiosity—no experience required!

DATE: Thursday, June 19th

TIME: 6:30 - 9:00pm

COST: $50

WHO'S INVITED: This class is anyone for ages 12+

(if you want to accompany a child younger than 12, let us know! If you're there to supervise, that works for us!)

TEACHER: McKay Orton Opeifa (instagram: @mckayjo) is a Master Beekeeper certified through Cornell University with over 17 years of experience working with honeybees. With a background in entomology, McKay is also a certified Honey Sommelier and a passionate advocate of apitherapy—the therapeutic use of hive products like honey, propolis, beeswax, and beehive air.

She has partnered with businesses throughout the Salt Lake area to install and manage rooftop hives, promoting urban pollinator health and community education. One of her greatest joys is suiting up kids and introducing them to the magic of bees, helping the next generation build confidence and curiosity around pollinators.

McKay’s teaching style is engaging, down-to-earth, and deeply informative. Whether you're dreaming of your first hive or just want to understand the healing power of honey, her classes offer a fun and inspiring gateway into the buzzing world of beekeeping.
